The non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that the majority of generative artificial intelligence chatbots available to the public, including ChatGPT, allow users to access content from Russian state media outlets that are subject to European sanctions and prohibited in the European Union.
According to RSF, this situation represents a significant failure in the enforcement of sanctions imposed by the EU against certain Russian media, as chatbots can provide access to content that should be blocked in European territory.
The organization warned that this vulnerability compromises the European Union's efforts to restrict the spread of disinformation and Russian propaganda, allowing European citizens to circumvent the restrictions imposed on sanctioned Russian state media.
RSF's report comes in a context of geopolitical tensions between the European Union and Russia, where sanctions on Russian state media outlets have been a fundamental tool to combat the Kremlin's informational influence in the European space.
