AI chatbots allow access to disinformation content

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 00:55

Several artificial intelligence chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude, are reproducing information from Russian media outlets that are considered Kremlin disinformation instruments. This situation allows false or manipulated content to reach a wider audience through these AI platforms.

The Russian media outlets in question are seen as government-controlled disinformation tools. When used as a source by AI systems, this content can be presented to users as reliable information, when in reality it is part of influence campaigns.

This discovery raises concerns about the ability of AI chatbots to distinguish reliable sources from sources that spread disinformation. The systems may not have sufficient mechanisms to filter or verify the origin and credibility of the information they reproduce.

The phenomenon highlights the challenges that AI faces in combating the spread of disinformation, especially when it comes from state-coordinated sources. By aggregating information from multiple sources, chatbots can unintentionally amplify false or biased narratives.
