The GNR issued an alert about a new scam scheme that is circulating in Portugal. The scheme consists of sending, to the victims' homes, letters accompanied by fake bank cards, which appear to be issued by the victims' respective banks.
The fraudulent communications inform that the old card has expired and request that the new card be urgently activated through a link provided in the letter. The professional appearance of the letters and cards aims to convince victims of the legitimacy of the communication.
By following the instructions and clicking on the link, victims are redirected to fraudulent pages where personal and banking data is requested. With this information, the scammers manage to access accounts and carry out unauthorized transactions.
The authorities recommend that citizens be wary of unsolicited communications, verify directly with the bank the authenticity of any cards received, and never click on links from unknown sources.
