Families of missing persons in Nepal are holding symbolic funerals for their loved ones lost after the devastating earthquake that hit the country. The collective ceremony was organized to allow relatives to mourn even without having found the bodies of their relatives.
The latest official count shows at least 1,118 dead and more than 4,000 people missing as a result of the earthquake. Authorities are still facing difficulties reaching remote areas and calculating the total number of victims.
The families expressed that the ceremony was essential to begin the grieving process, as the absence of bodies made emotional closure practically impossible. Many survivors lost entire homes and remain in temporary shelters.
Nepal received offers of international aid but faces significant logistical challenges to distribute resources in the regions most affected by the disaster.
