Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) announced Wednesday night that Benjamin Steinbruch will leave the position of president of the steelmaker. Steinbruch will assume the presidency of the company's Board of Directors, a position he had left in April. Fabio Schvartsman, who was previously CEO of Vale and Klabin, will assume the presidency of the company.
Benjamin Steinbruch led, in 1993, the consortium that participated in the privatization of CSN. After the privatization, he took command of the company. Under his leadership, the group expanded its operations beyond steel production and began operating in the mining, cement, logistics, and energy segments.
The change in the company's top position occurs at a time of reorganization. CSN has been conducting an asset sale program with the goal of reducing its debt. In the second quarter of this year, the company reported a net debt of R$ 42.13 billion. In January, CSN announced a divestment plan to reduce this debt.
