Portugal, the country of papers

This opinion article analyzes the persistent problem of bureaucracy in Portugal, arguing that the country confuses rigor with formalism, demanding excessive declarations, certificates, and proof documents that frequently refer to already known facts. The author highlights that this culture affects both the Public Administration and private entities in regulated sectors, and that institutions still refuse digitally signed documents or impose formalities not required by law. The economic costs are significant: delays in investments, increased transaction costs, waste of working hours, and reduced productivity. The article concludes that, as long as Portugal continues to measure rigor by the number of documents demanded instead of the quality of decisions, bureaucracy will remain intact, becoming a structural problem that affects the country's competitiveness.

Less unemployment and better wages. Final course grade still matters in the job market

A study by think tank EDULOG reveals that university students with higher final grades are less likely to be unemployed and earn significantly higher salaries — a 2.3% salary increase one year after graduation and 4% after five years for each grade point. The field of study is the factor that most differentiates graduates' outcomes in the Portuguese labor market, with Engineering and ICT standing out positively and Arts, Psychology and Humanities showing higher unemployment and overqualification rates. Curiously, international experience during the course does not show significant impacts on employability, while the type of institution (public or private) also does not have a relevant influence. The study also warns of the persistent disadvantage of female graduates in terms of salaries, contract stability and overqualification risk, associating this inequality with the differentiated gender role in society.

Steinbruch led the consortium that participated in the privatization of CSN in 1993 and since then has led the group's expansion beyond steel, covering mining, cement, logistics, and energy. The change occurs at a time of reorganization of the company, which is conducting an asset sale program to reduce its debt, which reached R$ 42.13 billion in net debt in the second quarter.
