Rangel does not expect new EU measures on West Bank until elections in Israel

RTP Notícias2 September 2026 at 22:50

Foreign Minister Rangel indicated today that the European Union is not expected to approve new measures on the settlements in the West Bank until the Israeli elections in October. This position comes at a time when the situation in the region continues to generate international tension.

Rangel highlighted that Portugal does not agree with the criterion of conditioning new EU measures on the scheduling of elections in Israel. This position reflects the Portuguese perspective that European decisions regarding settlements should not be postponed based on the electoral calendars of other countries.

The issue of settlements in the West Bank has been a recurring theme in relations between the EU and Israel, with Europeans regularly expressing their opposition to the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories. The Portuguese position is part of the broader context of European foreign policy regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
