The Municipality of Albufeira announced new security measures for the Oura area, following an incident that occurred on August 25 on Avenida Sá Carneiro Sul. The measures include the possibility of prohibiting or restricting road traffic and parking on that avenue, as well as the installation of bollards, barriers or other physical protection equipment.
The measures were analyzed at an extended meeting between municipal services and entities responsible for security, civil protection and rescue areas. The meeting aimed to evaluate the response given on the ground to the incident and identify changes that could reduce vulnerabilities in one of the main nighttime entertainment areas of Albufeira. The council stated that the work does not interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation, which is the responsibility of the competent authorities.
The Municipality also intends to prepare a Local Security Diagnosis for Albufeira, using specialized academic and technical knowledge, which will serve as the basis for an Integrated Urban Security Plan. On Avenida Sá Carneiro and surrounding areas, matters such as pedestrian circulation and protection, lighting, signage, parking reorganization and accessibility will be evaluated.
The mayor of Albufeira, Rui Cristina, argued that the incident should lead to a review of existing solutions and a reinforcement of prevention. The mayor acknowledged that no intervention will completely eliminate the risk, but guaranteed that all measures within the municipality's reach will be taken to reduce vulnerabilities and protect people.
