More than 1,200 genetic variants associated with five major personality traits identified

CNN Portugal2 September 2026 at 19:04

More than 1,200 genetic variants associated with five major personality traits were identified in a scientific study. The personality traits analyzed were neuroticism, openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion.

The genetic variants that predict personality also partially predicted other aspects of people's lives. Among these aspects are mental and physical health, longevity, education, professional paths, and outcomes.

The study reveals a connection between personality genetics and various important life outcomes, suggesting that the same genetic factors that influence personality traits may have a broader impact on well-being and achievements throughout life.

Scientists discover possible unexpected benefit involving semaglutide and mental health

A study conducted with nearly 15,000 people in Sweden found an association between the use of semaglutide — the active compound in medications like Ozempic and Wegovy — and a lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization among patients with bipolar disorder. The research, conducted by Griffith University, pointed to a 21% reduction in hospitalization risk, but scientists warn that the result does not prove that the medication is responsible for the improvement. The discovery suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) may influence the brain, in addition to blood sugar levels and appetite.

Invasive alga spreads along the coast of Sines and threatens biodiversity

An invasive alga has been accumulating in large quantities on several beaches in the municipality of Sines, in the district of Setúbal, representing a threat to local biodiversity. According to explanations from a scientist, the strong accumulation observed results from sea agitation, which tore part of the algae from the seabed and transported them to the coast. The phenomenon is worrying environmental authorities due to the negative impact this invasive species can have on the coastal ecosystems of the region.
