CNN Portugal2 September 2026 at 18:37

Chega was the first and only party to present a motion of censure against the Government and to request the resignation of the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves. This position arises in the context of various controversies involving the minister.

Paula Costa Simões, editor-in-chief of CNN Portugal, is the one analyzing this motion of censure presented by the Chega party. The analysis focuses on the reasons that led the party to take this position against the Executive.

The party bases its request for resignation and the motion of censure on the controversies surrounding Minister Luís Neves. Chega positions itself as the only party to assume this formal critical posture through a parliamentary instrument.

The motion of censure represents a significant political action by Chega, which attempts to capitalize on the controversies surrounding the minister to reinforce its opposition to the Government.

The minister of the Economy and Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, stated today that he is "eager" to provide clarifications in parliament on the execution of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), at the request of the Socialist Party (PS), emphasizing that he has already requested to appear as quickly as possible. The minister guaranteed that Portugal will use 100% of the available European Union subsidies and explained that the existence of schools and health centers still under construction results from the Government having contracted projects corresponding to 101% of the PRR, above the commitments made with Brussels. Castro Almeida also mentioned that the assessment of projects funded through the State Budget will only be completed in September, and defended that more than 31,000 houses have already been built, surpassing the target of 26,000 set in the plan.
