Uber plans to cut 10% of its workforce worldwide. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced this decision in a message sent to workers on Wednesday, explaining that the goal is to simplify the structure, redefine strategy and concentrate investments and talent on the biggest opportunities. All affected workers have already been notified, except in countries where local processes need to be followed.
The growth recorded by Uber over the past five years has brought organizational complexity, with more hierarchical levels, greater fragmentation of responsibility and structures that made sense when the company was smaller. The company will eliminate coordination positions, reduce the number of hierarchical levels and broaden the scope of each manager, concentrating teams where there was duplication of work.
Uber will also reduce the number of key hubs and ask most remote workers to start working in person, with only 1% of workers continuing to work remotely. The CEO assures that the decisions are difficult, but will help the company become simpler, faster and able to invest in the future.
Uber employs approximately 600 people in Portugal. Questioned by ECO, the company's Portuguese arm did not say whether the Portuguese team will be affected by the cuts, referring to the CEO's message without further details.
