A suspension bridge collapsed during its inauguration ceremony in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, Indonesia, on August 30. The Pongpet Suspension Bridge, just over 59 meters in length and suspended approximately three meters above the river below, collapsed while dozens of local residents were crossing it during the opening celebration.
The incident occurred when a rope suddenly snapped, giving way under the weight of the participants. Several spectators were heard screaming as village residents clung to the crumbling structure to avoid falling into the river below.
The Indonesian Army reported no deaths resulting from the accident. However, several people suffered minor injuries and abrasions, including the head of Pangandaran Council, Citra Pitriyami, and the head of the Department of Public Works.
