Ana Peleteiro questions the RFEF plan for egg freezing: "Don't sell it as a feminist measure"

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General2 September 2026 at 13:39

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) agreed on a historic initiative to facilitate egg freezing for international footballers. However, this proposal generated strong controversy in the sports world, with opinions divided between supporters and detractors of the measure.

Spanish athlete Ana Peleteiro, an Olympic medalist, decided to speak out on the matter and publicly criticized the RFEF initiative. The triple jumper considered that the proposal is not at all appropriate and expressed her disagreement with how it is being presented.

According to Peleteiro, selling this measure as a feminist action may hide a deeper problem related to the difficulties that female athletes still face in reconciling a high-level professional career with the desire to become mothers.

The debate about motherhood in elite sports thus remains open, with voices like Ana Peleteiro's defending the need to address the roots of the problem instead of offering solutions that, in her view, merely mask a reality that affects many professional athletes.
