The waste collection service in the municipality of Belmonte was considered "insufficient" by the mayor, António Luís Beites, during a public meeting of the Belmonte executive last Friday, the 29th. The mayor stated that he has already spoken with the company SUMA, responsible for the service, so that it is reinforced, emphasizing that currently the Council honors its financial commitments with the company and that this company must also comply with what is contractually established, having already been notified in writing.
The problem worsens during summer, when the arrival of emigrants increases the population in the area, without there being a reinforcement of the service. A resident reported specific problems in the oldest part of the town, where improper parking by some residents hinders the passage of the garbage truck on some streets, leading to collections not being made on the scheduled day and being postponed, accumulating garbage on public roads.
António Luís Beites warned about the hygiene problems this situation causes and considered that seeing the town streets full of garbage "is a terrible calling card for visitors". The mayor recalled that in summer, every year, it is necessary to reinforce this service.
Regarding the recycling points, managed by Resiestrela, there are also problems that have already been reported, and according to the mayor, this selective collection network will also be reinforced in the future.
