From November 1st, recreational bivalve fishing will be banned in the international stretch of the Minho river for public health reasons. The edict published in the Official Gazette establishes that all harvesting and capture of cockles and any other bivalves throughout the TIRM is prohibited, until the necessary management measures are approved and sanitary evaluation of the resources is completed.
This document aims to regulate for the 2026/2027 season the exercise of professional, recreational fishing and fishing grounds in the TIRM, including existing islands, in order to guarantee habitat conservation. The regulation falls within the powers assigned to the Permanent International Commission of the Minho River.
The Minho river serves as the border between Portugal and Spain, running approximately 340 kilometres before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
