The tax authorities are conducting inspection and awareness actions on Portuguese beaches in conjunction with the Maritime Police since July 29, in an operation called "Sea in Sight" that runs until September. The Tax and Customs Authority (AT) deployed 63 tax inspectors on the ground in coordination with 58 Maritime Police officers, covering beaches in the districts of Aveiro, Beja, Coimbra, Faro, Leiria, Lisboa, Porto, Setúbal, and Viana do Castelo.
So far, the inspectors have identified several infractions related to the lack of invoice issuance and the use of invoicing programs that do not comply with legal requirements. The Ministry of Finance did not specify the exact number of actions carried out or infractions identified, only stating that there were dozens.
The operation aims to promote voluntary compliance with tax obligations through direct contact with economic operators of beach concessions, raising awareness of the importance of issuing invoices and correctly complying with legal obligations. The goal is to contribute to reinforcing tax fairness and fair competition conditions among economic operators.
The "Sea in Sight" action was initiated at a time of transition in AT's leadership. Mário Campos became the Director-General of the Tax and Customs Authority since August 1, succeeding Helena Borges after ten years as Deputy Director-General of the tax authority's information systems area.
