The Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (Abiec) reported on Wednesday that it developed a protocol to control the use of antimicrobials by beef producers and that all member companies exporting to the European Union have already adhered to the system, totaling 100% adherence. The measure was a requirement from the European bloc for beef shipments to be maintained.
According to Abiec, official guarantees from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) have already been presented to the European Union. The association stated that the protocol is in operation as part of measures to demonstrate compliance with European sanitary rules.
On Monday, the European Commission had reiterated that Brazil would be excluded from the list of countries authorized to export certain products to the EU. The reason would be the lack of sufficient guarantees from Brazil regarding the compliance of its products with European sanitary standards, especially in relation to the use of antibiotics prohibited in the region.
The ban, had there not been a reversal in the decision—which had already been announced in May—would take effect on Thursday, affecting Brazilian beef exports to the European market.
