Had a car accident? Here are 6 things you should do to avoid insurance problems

The Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF) recommends six essential precautions to take after a car accident to avoid insurance problems: check for injuries and, if so, contact the authorities; collect identification data of drivers, vehicles and their respective insurance policies; take photographs of the damage and the accident scene; identify and collect contact details of potential witnesses; correctly fill out the Friendly Motor Vehicle Accident Statement, without needing to agree on fault; and report the claim to the insurer within the legal deadline of eight days. The ASF warns that, even when the other driver admits fault, it is essential to collect all this information, as the determination of responsibility is subsequently analyzed by the insurers based on the available evidence.

Cheap money is over. Japan sees 10-year interest rate hit 3% for the first time in 30 years

The yield on Japan's 10-year government bond hit 3% for the first time since September 1996, signaling the end of three decades of cheap money that sustained global markets through the carry trade mechanism, where investors borrowed yen almost free of charge in Tokyo to invest in higher-yielding assets in other markets. The Bank of Japan is expected to raise rates to 1.25% at the September meeting, with an 80% probability assigned by the market. The yield rise occurs in a context of fiscal fragility, with about one in four yen of the 2026 budget destined for public debt service, equivalent to 204% of GDP. Paradoxically, the yen remains weak, hovering around 160 per dollar, despite joint currency intervention with the United States in July. Japanese investors are selling US bonds at historic volumes, which could pressure yields in developed markets.

Strike notices soar almost 65% in the first seven months of the year

In the first seven months of 2026, 739 strike pre-notices were registered in Portugal, an increase of almost 65% compared to the same period in 2025 (449 notices), according to data from DGERT. This rise is explained by the strong opposition to the Labour reform of the Government of Luís Montenegro, which was ultimately rejected in Parliament. UGT and CGTP called general strikes against the proposed changes, which included expanding sectors with minimum services. The Executive argues that the revision of labour law is necessary to increase productivity and wages, but the Chega party blocked the approval of the measures. Of the 122 pre-notices that resulted in minimum services in July, 50 were through agreements between the parties, 26 went through the CES and 46 were decided by government decree.
