EU considers additional sanctions due to deportation of Ukrainian children

Euronews Portugal2 September 2026 at 12:52

The European Union is preparing new sanctions against 27 Russian individuals and entities involved in the deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children. These sanctions come in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and international concerns regarding the treatment of displaced children.

The targets of the sanctions are individuals and organizations that allegedly participated directly in the forced removal and indoctrination of Ukrainian children, practices that have been widely condemned by the international community.

The new restrictive measures are being prepared on the eve of a conference to be held in September in Toronto, dedicated to the return of Ukrainian children to their families and communities of origin.

This EU initiative is part of a broader effort to hold Russia accountable for alleged violations of children's rights during the conflict, with the sanctions expected to hinder the activities of those allegedly involved in these practices.

Church/Environment: International Theological Commission proposes definition of "sin against creation and the the Creator"

The International Theological Commission, a body linked to the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, published a new document approved by Pope Leo XIV, proposing that environmental degradation be formally defined as a "sin against creation and the Creator." The text argues that this definition should simultaneously integrate ecological damage and the violation of the divine plan for humanity, proposing "situated anthropocentrism" as an alternative to "predatory anthropocentrism." The document, developed over five years, criticizes the current economic model and proposes an alternative system at the service of life, demanding a comprehensive "ecological conversion" that links the "cry of the earth" to the "cry of the poor," while simultaneously warning against extreme environmental philosophies such as biocentrism or radical ecocentrism.
