The MAM Rio inaugurated on September 19 the exhibition "Carnival as a method," which brings the creation processes of samba schools into the museum. Curated by Raquel Barreto, Pablo Lafuente and Phelipe Rezende, the show occupies the Monumental Hall and the mezzanine of the museum.
The exhibition brings together unpublished works commissioned from six active carnival designers: André Rodrigues (in partnership with Juliana Joannou), Annik Salmon, Antônio Gonzaga, Gabriel Haddad and Leonardo Bora, and Thayssa Menezes. It also presents works by three historical names of the avenue: Joãosinho Trinta, Rosa Magalhães and Maria Augusta Rodrigues.
The show also includes paintings by artists linked to samba, such as Heitor dos Prazeres, João da Baiana and Nelson Sargento, expanding the dialogue between different cultural manifestations.
The proposal of the exhibition is to recognize carnival designers as visual artists and bring closer to the institutional art circuit a production that, despite its importance for Brazilian culture, still occupies little space in museums.
