PS does not see alterations that justify doubling the price of the police station works in Ponta do Sol

dnoticias.pt2 September 2026 at 12:03

The PS municipal committee of Ponta do Sol expressed surprise at the announcement that the new PSP police station will cost 4.5 million euros. The value represents double what was initially planned, with the municipal executive, led by president Rui Marques (PSD), justifying the increase with changes to the initial project. The socialists consider that there were no changes that justify such a price duplication. The party demands clarification on the real reasons for this cost increase.

Waste collection service concerns in Belmonte

The mayor of Belmonte, António Luís Beites, warned that the waste collection service in the municipality is insufficient, particularly in summer, when the arrival of emigrants increases the population. The mayor revealed he has already spoken with the company SUMA, responsible for the service, to reinforce collections, emphasizing that the council is fulfilling its contractual commitments and expects the company to do the same, having already been notified in writing. The problem is worse in the historic center, where improper parking hinders the passage of trucks. Beites also mentioned that there are problems with the recycling points, managed by Resiestrela, which will also be communicated and subject to future reinforcement.

Municipality reinforces support for farmers affected by fires

The municipality of Valpaços, led by mayor Jorge Mata Pires, met with the parish council presidents of the nine parishes affected by the fires and with agricultural associations to coordinate a joint response to support producers. The main objective is to help farmers prepare and submit applications for measure C.4.1.3 — Restoration of Productive Potential, which covers farms with losses exceeding 30% of productive potential. The strategy involves the municipal Promotion and Investment Office, the parish councils and agricultural associations, which will play a fundamental role in identifying and referring producers. Support includes a non-reimbursable grant of 100% up to 10 thousand euros, and 80% or 50% for higher amounts, depending on whether the beneficiary has active crop insurance. Applications can be submitted until October 27, 2026.
