The new IP8 variants in Beringel and Figueira dos Cavaleiros, in the Beja district, were officially opened to traffic at 9pm on Monday, September 1st. The two sections create an external connection to the localities and allow the diversion of traffic that previously crossed through urban centres, including heavy vehicles. This opening alters the road connection between Beja and the A2, allowing drivers to avoid passing through the interior of the two towns.
The intervention is part of the IP8 requalification programme and has European funding through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The intense traffic that for years characterised the two localities now has an alternative outside the urban areas, addressing one of the main difficulties experienced by local populations. The change is particularly relevant for heavy traffic, which now has an external route around the towns.
The works also aim to improve road safety conditions and reduce the constraints associated with traffic within urban areas. A new phase of works is planned between Santa Margarida do Sado and Ferreira do Alentejo, on a section of approximately 14 kilometres, with deep intervention on the pavement and improvements to the connection junctions.
Between Ferreira do Alentejo and Beja, curve corrections, enhanced safety conditions and new agricultural passages, both overpasses and underpasses, are also planned. The requalification aims to gradually transform the IP8 into a more continuous connection between Baixo Alentejo and the A2, with the opening of the Beringel and Figueira dos Cavaleiros variants constituting one of the stages already completed in this process.
