The Portuguese footballer João Mário has left Besiktas of Turkey and is travelling to Athens to formalize his transfer to AEK, a club in the Greek Super League. The 32-year-old player is already in the Greek capital to sign the contract with his new team.
João Mário was on loan to AEK during last season, which gave him the opportunity to get to know the club and the Hellenic league. The performance he showed while at AEK convinced the club's board to exercise the purchase option and secure the permanent signing of the Portuguese midfielder.
This transfer marks the end of João Mário's link with Besiktas, where he never managed to establish himself consistently. The player, who arrived at the Turkish club in 2021 from Inter Milan, saw his contract terminated by mutual consent, thus allowing his permanent departure to AEK.
With this signing, AEK reinforces its midfield with an experienced player who has played for major European clubs, including Sporting, Benfica, Inter Milan, and Lokomotiv Moscow.
