The European Commission has warned China that it must present concrete results in trade negotiations by October or risk facing sanctions. European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič told Euronews that the negotiations to rebalance trade between the EU and China are considered "highly political". The European executive is under pressure to demonstrate that measures against Beijing are effective, at a time when European leaders are seeking clear guarantees that China is willing to make trade concessions. The threat of sanctions comes in the context of an escalating trade conflict between the two economic powers.
