PJ Direction Transfers Coordinator Who Reported Illegal Wiretap

CNN Portugal2 September 2026 at 11:32

The National Direction of the Judicial Police transferred David Freitas, the coordinator who filed a complaint against Carlos Cabreiro, one day after the public disclosure of this accusation. Freitas will be assigned to teaching at the PJ school, allegedly because there is a shortage of trainers at the institution.

The transfer comes after Freitas accused Carlos Cabreiro, his superior, of having ordered an illegal wiretapping operation. The coordinator also alleged that Cabreiro lied in court during a trial.

The PJ direction assures that the change in duties is due exclusively to the need for trainers at the corporation's school, denying any connection to the complaint filed by Freitas against Cabreiro.

The case arises at a time of internal tension at the Judicial Police, with the transfer being interpreted as retaliation against the coordinator who reported the alleged illegal practices.
