The United Nations Organization (UN) presented on Wednesday (2) measures to contain global warming after the world exceeds the symbolic 1.5°C limit, in an unprecedented report that received criticism from various associations. The UN states that techniques to remove CO2 from the atmosphere will not help reverse the overshoot of the temperature target if emissions do not fall significantly.
Last year, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, had already admitted, as had several scientists, that exceeding the 1.5°C barrier was inevitable. However, this is the first time a UN agency explores ways to limit damage after the limit is exceeded.
Scientists agree that warming exceeding 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era presents serious risks for the planet. Almost 200 countries committed in 2015, in Paris, to try to keep global temperature rise below this limit, considered the most ambitious.
However, predictions indicate the planet should exceed this barrier in the coming years, leading international attention to turn toward strategies to mitigate the effects of warming.
