Government admits problems with Volta System and prepares new solutions

Notícias Lx2 September 2026 at 11:29

The Government admits problems with the Volta System, which has been in operation since April, and guarantees it is looking for solutions for the difficulties identified in the collection of plastic bottles and cans covered by the new deposit and refund mechanism. The Minister of Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, acknowledged this Tuesday, in Brussels, that the implementation of the system presents flaws that need to be corrected. The Volta System is a mechanism that obliges consumers to pay a fee for beverage packaging, which is reimbursed when the consumer returns the empty packaging at designated collection points. The government states it is working to resolve the operational problems that have been reported since the system's launch. The Minister of Environment highlighted that the implementation of a system of this magnitude always involves challenges and that time is needed to adjust all processes.
