The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has caused more than 3 thousand deaths, according to the latest report released by Congolese authorities. The disease, officially declared in May, particularly affects the north and east of the country and has already registered more than 6 thousand confirmed cases, becoming the deadliest in the history of the DRC.
The outbreak began in Ituri province, in the northeast of the country, and rapidly spread across six provinces in the north and east of Congo. The region is characterized by fragile State presence and armed group activity, which hinders the fight against the disease.
According to data released by health authorities on Monday, since the beginning of the outbreak, 6,041 confirmed cases, 2,911 deaths and 1,366 recovered people have been registered. The epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
