Iran condemned today the American attack against the south of the country, which according to the article caused 18 deaths. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian Parliament and chief negotiator, used social media to classify the United States as Satan, in direct reference to the attack.
The Iranian leader wrote that if a power acts like Satan, chooses targets like Satan, and kills like Satan, then it is Satan itself. The expression Satan applied to the United States is not new in Iranian political vocabulary, having been frequently used by Iranian leaders since the Islamic Revolution.
The American attack on southern Iran constitutes the latest episode of tension between the two countries, in a context of prolonged conflict. Ghalibaf, by publicly assuming this inflamed position, reinforced Iran's bellicose rhetoric against Washington.
