Book Voucher Program exceeds 52 thousand vouchers and more than 85% have been used

Público2 September 2026 at 09:01

The book voucher program exceeded 52 thousand vouchers issued, of which more than 85% have already been used by beneficiaries. This reading support program was aimed at a universe of 207,086 young people residing in Portugal born in 2007 and 2008.

Despite the significant number of vouchers issued, program participation fell short of expectations, reaching only about 25% of its potential audience. This means that approximately three quarters of eligible young people did not use the book voucher.

The program was created by the Portuguese government as a measure to encourage reading and young people's contact with books, offering a voucher for the purchase of literary works. The utilization data reveals that, although the utilization rate of vouchers issued is high, the reach among the targeted age group remains limited.
