Portugal fails on disability rights

Portugal is failing to comply with the rights of persons with disabilities, according to an alert issued by the National Monitoring Mechanism for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This monitoring body identified that the current situation in the country represents a serious violation of the international obligations assumed by Portugal.

According to the alert, the main problem is no longer the absence of legislation on the rights of persons with disabilities. Instead, the body points to an unequal application of existing laws, meaning that, although there are norms that protect these rights, they are not being implemented consistently throughout the national territory.

The National Monitoring Mechanism is the body responsible for monitoring and evaluating compliance with the rights of persons with disabilities in Portugal, functioning as an independent oversight and inspection entity in this area.

Santo Amaro commemorates Venerável Teresa de Saldanha

The Parish of Santo Amaro, in Madeira, will celebrate next Friday the 189th anniversary of the birth of Venerável Teresa de Saldanha, founder of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena. Teresa de Saldanha was born in Lisbon in 1837 and was the first woman to found a religious congregation in Portugal after the extinction of religious orders in 1834. Her work focused on education and social assistance, with the congregation eventually having 27 houses in various countries. In 2015, Pope Francis authorized the decree that recognized her heroic virtues, granting her the title of Venerable. The celebration includes Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Thanksgiving Eucharist, open to the community.
