22 deaths recorded in four months of bathing season, three in the Algarve

The National Maritime Authority recorded 22 deaths during the four months of the bathing season, between May 1 and August 31. Three of these deaths occurred on Algarve beaches. A total of 1,285 rescues and 2,359 first aid actions were also recorded during this period.

In the Algarve, two deaths by drowning were recorded on lifeguarded beaches in Albufeira: at Praia do Peneco and Praia de São Rafael. The third death in the Algarve region occurred at Praia do Cabeço, in Vila Real de Santo António, which was not lifeguarded, and was due to sudden illness.

Of the 22 deaths recorded nationwide, 12 resulted from drowning, five on lifeguarded sea beaches, five on non-lifeguarded sea beaches, two on non-lifeguarded maritime areas and two outside the bathing season. Sudden illness caused nine deaths, four on lifeguarded beaches, three in other non-lifeguarded areas and two outside the bathing season.

One death of unknown origin was also recorded on a lifeguarded sea beach and one bather was missing, whose incident occurred on August 28 at Praia da Ursa, in the municipality of Sintra.
