The Socialist Party presented at the Assembly of the Republic a Draft Vote of Greeting for the Festas do Povo of Campo Maior, an initiative that aims to recognize and value this manifestation of popular culture and civic participation. Deputy Luís Moreira Testa, elected for the Portalegre constituency, is the first signatory of the project, which will now be considered and voted on by Parliament.
The Festas do Povo took place between August 8 and 16, 2026, after eleven years of absence, once again transforming Campo Maior into a scene of paper flowers, color and popular art. For the deputy, the Festas do Povo are a demonstration of the strength of a community that mobilizes and believes in its land, also being the first edition after the passing of Commander Rui Nabeiro.
The vote project recalls the recognition of Festas do Povo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, on December 15, 2021, highlighting its contribution to the enhancement of Campo Maior, the Alto Alentejo and the entire cross-border region. Luís Moreira Testa argued that it is the responsibility of the Assembly of the Republic to recognize what distinguishes and enhances the territory.
The initiative greets the Municipal Council of Campo Maior, the Association of Festas do Povo and, in a special way, the people of Campo Maior, the volunteers, the families, the craftsmen and all those who dedicated their time and creativity to the construction of this living heritage.
