People with visual disabilities continue to face obstacles in exercising their right to vote in Portugal. Accessibility in electoral processes remains limited, especially with regard to voting materials made available.
Braille templates are available for legislative, presidential, and European elections, allowing citizens with visual disabilities to participate more autonomously in these electoral acts. However, this same tool is not made available for municipal elections.
This disparity means that voters with visual disabilities are treated differently depending on the type of election, which raises questions about equal access to voting. Municipal elections, which elect local government bodies such as municipal chambers and municipal assemblies, are thus excluded from existing accessibility measures.
