Violence exerted by children against their own parents continues to worry the authorities. In the first six months of 2026, an average of eight complaints per day were registered related to assaults by children on parents, which represents a significant increase compared to previous periods.
This phenomenon affects families from different socioeconomic and cultural contexts, not being limited to any specific group within Portuguese society. Authorities point out that many cases remain unreported, suggesting that the actual numbers may be even higher.
Security forces and social services warn of the need for greater monitoring of families and prevention programs that address this issue. Prolonged exposure to domestic violence and the lack of support mechanisms are identified as factors contributing to this type of behavior.
The victims, generally parents or stepchildren, face difficulties in seeking help, whether due to shame, fear of retaliation, or the family relationship itself. Authorities appeal to victims to report situations and seek support from the competent entities.
