Angolans displaced by drought face systematic human rights violations in Namibia, according to a report by Amnesty International. The organization documented cases of arbitrary detentions, imprisonment and deportations of people who fled their country due to climate change.
The Angolan climate displaced admit limiting as much as possible access to healthcare and other essential services for fear of being detained by Namibian authorities. This fear leaves thousands of people in extreme vulnerability.
The Amnesty report highlights that the drought caused by climate change in the Angolan region forced thousands of people to cross the border in search of better living conditions, but they find in Namibia an environment of hostility and violation of their fundamental rights.
