The Las Hurdes forest fire, which began 15 days ago, burned more than 3,700 hectares and affected two populations: Avellanar, belonging to the municipality of Pinofranqueado, and Cerezal, in the municipality of Nuñomoral. Although they are separated by only 8 kilometers as the crow flies, the journey between them takes more than half an hour. The fire connected both municipalities, leaving a trail of destruction across the region.
The Extremadura Regional Government Council traveled to the region precisely on the day marking 15 days since the fire began, to officially announce the aid destined for those affected by the forest fires. This visit represented an important moment for the entire region.
The newspaper El Periódico Extremadura returned to the area to learn about the feelings of the neighbors in the region, who continue to look with desolation at the black landscape left by the flames. The inhabitants say they feel vulnerable and think that next summer could bring more fires.
