The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) seized more than 560,000 dollars (483,000 euros) in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas, the US Department of Justice announced. The operation represents a significant disruption to the financing of the Palestinian Islamist group.
American authorities managed to identify and confiscate the funds that were being transferred through cryptocurrency platforms. This form of financing has been increasingly used by extremist organizations to bypass traditional capital movement controls.
The Department of Justice stated that this seizure is part of a broader effort to disrupt Hamas's financing networks. Authorities continue to investigate other sources of funding for the group.
This action falls within the context of international tensions regarding terrorism financing and the use of digital technologies for fund movement by extremist groups. Cryptocurrencies have been identified as a particular challenge for financial enforcement authorities due to their relative anonymity.
