The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report on the overshoot of the global warming limit foreseen by the Paris Agreement. The document proposes a more emergency and realistic stance to deal with the inevitability of this phenomenon.
The report views CO2 removal technologies from the atmosphere with skepticism, arguing that these techniques will not be sufficient to reverse the temperature excess if greenhouse gas emissions do not decrease significantly.
The term "overshoot" is used to describe the period when the planet will have temperatures above 1.5°C relative to pre-industrial levels, the limit established by the Paris Agreement. According to the document, this threshold is expected to be exceeded within a few years when considering the average of each decade.
The report also mentions that the thawing of permafrost (frozen ground) in deep layers could release a large amount of carbon earlier than expected, further worsening the climate crisis.
