The revelations threw the Supreme Court into an unprecedented crisis in 135 years of history. A Federal Police report laid bare the dangerous relationships between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro, at the center of billion-dollar fraud. Vorcaro, who was under investigation, turned to Moraes seeking advice and protection.
Three days before his arrest, Vorcaro sent a message to the minister saying: "We are always together. You know I have gratitude for my life to you." The next day, the banker asked Moraes if he should flee the country, questioning whether they could do something and if he should stay away until Monday.
Vorcaro was ultimately intercepted with one foot on the jet, as he attempted to take off for Dubai. The minister's responses were deleted, but the Federal Police found that Moraes crossed the boundaries between public and private. The report also revealed that Moraes was the last to edit the draft of a contract involving the banker.
The crisis brings into focus serious suspicions against the minister, the internal warfare within the Court itself, and the context of the presidential election, at a delicate moment for the Supreme Court.
