Bessent says 19 finance ministers consider cheap exports 'unsustainable'

SAPO2 September 2026 at 02:12

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Tuesday that 19 G20 members reached an agreement to combat cheap export flows that cause imbalances in the world economy. Bessent made this statement during a G20 meeting, a bloc that brings together the world's largest economies.

China was the only country to oppose this position among G20 members. The Asian country, known for being a large exporter of goods at competitive prices, did not agree with the assessment that cheap exports represent an unsustainable problem for the global economy.

The issue of cheap exports and trade imbalances has been a recurring concern in international economic discussions, with several countries expressing interest in creating mechanisms to balance global trade and protect their domestic industries.

Fintechs increase GDP by R$ 1.6 trillion in ten years and reduce costs with fees by R$ 149 billion, says study

A study by the Reglab research center, commissioned by Zetta (which brings together the country's largest fintechs, such as Nubank, Mercado Pago, and PicPay), revealed that digital financial institutions added R$ 1.6 trillion to Brazil's GDP between 2016 and 2026. Without fintechs, GDP in the first quarter of 2026 would be 2.2% lower, with emphasis on an increase of R$ 982 billion in consumption and R$ 371 billion in investments during the period. The research also calculated savings of R$ 149 billion for families and businesses in costs related to interest rates and bank fees, with R$ 102 billion referring to interest and the remainder to service charges. The analysis used a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) structural model.
