The municipalities of Porto and Gaia have approved a joint agreement on the creation of a registration platform for heavy vehicle circulation. This platform aims to control and monitor truck circulation on the VCI.
From the 15th onwards, trucks will be prohibited from driving on the VCI, the inner beltway that connects the two cities. This measure comes as part of the restrictions imposed to improve traffic flow and safety in the region.
The municipal councils of both cities will be responsible for implementing and enforcing compliance with this prohibition. The agreement establishes the terms for the operationalization of the registration and control system for heavy vehicles.
The prohibition specifically applies to heavy vehicles that intend to cross the VCI, mainly affecting freight traffic between the two banks of the Douro. The municipalities intend to thereby reduce congestion and environmental impacts in the urban area.
