Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) informed allies on Tuesday that he does not intend to move forward with impeachment requests against Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes, even in the face of renewed opposition pressure following the release of messages between the magistrate and former banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master.
Bolsonarist senators have stepped up the offensive against Moraes and have also started targeting Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues, intensifying attacks on the Judiciary.
A member of the congressional leadership assesses that the revelations make it harder for Alcolumbre to contain the impeachment pressure, but says the Senate president is not expected to make any decisions at this time.
The assessment is that the increased tension between the branches of government may also cause friction for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's (PT) administration, given his closeness to the Supreme Court and to Moraes himself.
