Mirtes Renata, mother of boy Miguel Otávio, graduated from the law school last Saturday in Recife. The graduation ceremony was marked by an emotional tribute to her son, who died in June 2020 at age 5 after falling from the 9th floor of a luxury building in the capital of Pernambuco. At the time, Miguel was under the care of Sari Corte Real, Mirtes' former employer.
Mirtes enrolled in the law program with the goal of following her son's case in court. During the ceremony, she entered to the song "Maria, Maria" while a photo of Miguel was displayed on the screen. In the images, she was widely celebrated by those present at the graduation.
In her speech, Mirtes declared that she descended the stairs carrying much more than a diploma, including history, pain, dreams, struggle, and the longing for the love of her life. She stated that every step until there was proof that, even when life tries to knock us down, it is possible to choose to continue.
The graduate concluded her speech directing the achievement toward her son, saying that this achievement was his. She stated that from that moment on, Mirtes Renata would begin writing a new chapter without ever forgetting where she came from and for whom she had made it there.
