The Rio Festival will open this year with the feature film "A Bola Preta", directed by the Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as "Los Javis". The Brazilian premiere will be on October 1st at Cine Odeon, at the Luiz Severiano Ribeiro Cultural Center, a traditional venue for the festival's opening.
The film was produced by Netflix and distributed in Brazil by Paris Filmes. The production gained prominence at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 20-minute standing ovation and earned the directors the Best Direction award. The feature was also selected for international festivals such as San Sebastián and Sydney.
Inspired by the unfinished work of the same name by Federico García Lorca and the play "La piedra oscura" by Alberto Conejero, the film follows the stories of three gay men in different periods of Spanish history: 1932, 1937, and 2017.
