CNE approves AI regulation in education and prohibits students up to the 5th grade from using it alone at school

The National Education Council (CNE) approved this Tuesday the regulation of artificial intelligence use in Brazilian schools and universities. Among the main rules are the prohibition of students up to the 5th grade from using generative AI tools alone and the prohibition of using AI to correct essay evaluations, essays, or authored works that require interpretive judgment. The norm also prohibits academic sanctions based exclusively on AI-generated content detectors, social scoring systems, automated emotion recognition, and exploitation of student vulnerabilities. The rules will take effect after approval by the MEC, with a 12-month deadline for institutions to adapt. The text was reported by council members Celso Niskier and Israel Batista.
