London will announce measures on West Bank settlements. Israel threatens to retaliate

Now1 September 2026 at 21:55

The new British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, announced that London will adopt measures in the coming weeks regarding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. This declaration comes after the United Kingdom condemned acts of violence committed by Israeli settlers against the Palestinian community in the West Bank.

The British government, through its new head of diplomacy, classified as acts of terrorism the aggressions perpetrated by settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. This position represents a significant change in the United Kingdom's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In response to the measures announced by London, Israel threatened to retaliate. The Israeli government expressed its displeasure at the British decision, suggesting possible diplomatic consequences between the two countries.

The last neighborhood cinema on the Cascais Line closed. The municipality is buying it

The last neighborhood cinema on the Cascais Line, the Atlântida Cine in Carcavelos, closed in 2024 and the Cascais Municipal Council is buying it for 600 thousand euros. The municipality approved the acquisition unanimously in June, guaranteeing that the space will continue to function as a cinema, although it may host other cultural uses when not in programming. However, the independent film distributor Cinetoscópio and a community of fans expressed concerns that the intention would be to transform the space into a multipurpose auditorium, which would mean the end of the cinema as it existed. Cinetoscópio had presented a proposal of 200 thousand euros to operate the cinema without public investment, but the council opted for the acquisition. Founded in 1963 by Fausto Semedo, the Atlântida was for decades a reference point for independent cinema in the area, resisting the closure of other venues on the Cascais Line.
