A survey by the Financial Times newspaper identified a significant increase in loneliness among young people in the United States and Europe. The survey revealed that, in 2023, one in 10 Americans aged 23 to 29 did not spend any minute of the day interacting face-to-face with other people. Among the most interactive young people, time in company dropped from 87% in the pre-pandemic years to 83% today. In the United Kingdom, the share of young people with no "close friend" rose from 1% in 2015 to 5% today.
The psychologist and writer Alexandre Coimbra Amaral commented on the survey in an interview with CBN Studio on Tuesday (1st). According to him, loneliness is a psychic state characterized by the feeling of being "disconnected from the world," as if the world were happening around the person without their participation in it.
Amaral stated that loneliness represents "an abyss for the human being," saying that it is not good for anyone to feel alone, except in the moment when the person genuinely wishes to be alone, which would be a different situation.
