Moraes to be investigated at the STF? Find out the next steps after revelations of messages with Vorcaro

cbn1 September 2026 at 21:33

The future of the investigations into the relationship between Justice Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and the former owner of Banco Master, Daniel Vorcaro, now depends on the next steps within the court itself. Justice André Mendonça, the rapporteur of the procedure, will forward to the Attorney General's Office (PGR) the new elements gathered by the Federal Police and indicated that the case should be evaluated by the STF plenary. The material includes messages attributed to Vorcaro involving Moraes and the Attorney General of Brazil, Paulo Gonet.

Despite the new revelations, there is still no formal investigation against Alexandre de Moraes. Any potential opening of an investigation will depend on analysis by the Supreme Court justices. According to jurists consulted by CBN, given the involvement of members of the court itself and the PGR, the tendency is for Mendonça to avoid making single-handed decisions about the new elements before an evaluation by the plenary.

The expectation is that any measures will be taken by the collegiate body, considering the sensitivity of the case involving members of the institution itself. The procedure continues to move forward, with the new elements awaiting analysis by both the PGR and the STF.

Lula will seek distance from Moraes, while other presidential candidates criticize Supreme Court minister

President Lula will try to distance himself from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, after revelations about alleged instructions that the magistrate would have given to former banker Daniel Vorcaro, of Banco Master, during the financial crisis of the institution. According to allies, Lula will avoid speaking publicly about the subject so as not to generate political wear while seeking his fourth term, and should adopt the discourse that the STF is an independent power. In a different posture, presidential candidates Flávio Bolsonaro, Romeu Zema and Augusto Cury publicly criticized Moraes after a Federal Police report showed alleged exchanges of messages between the banker and the minister during a period of 13 days at the peak of the Banco Master crisis.

“Apesar de poucas vezes ter visto uma campanha tão agressiva contra um ministro, acho que o tom [de Luís Neves] e o lugar foram errados”

"Despite rarely having seen such an aggressive campaign against a minister, I think the tone [of Luís Neves] and the place were wrong"

The episode of "Antes Pelo Contrário" with Daniel Oliveira and Francisco Mendes da Silva analyzed three main themes of current Portuguese politics: the threat of a motion of no confidence by the Chega party against the Government, the case of Minister Luís Neves, which generated an intense campaign against him, and the Constitutional Court's decision to give the green light to the return law. Regarding Luís Neves, the analysts considered that, although such aggressive campaigns against a minister are rare, the tone and the chosen context were inappropriate.

Senate approves Pacheco for TCU seat after legislator was passed over by Lula for a STF seat

The Senate approved on Tuesday the name of Rodrigo Pacheco (PSB-MG) for a seat on the Court of Accounts of the Union (TCU), in a maneuver led by the president of the House, Davi Alcolumbre. Pacheco will occupy the seat left by Minister Bruno Dantas, who formalized his early departure. The indication was formalized on Monday night to advance in the last week of voting before the elections. The Senate heard only the rapporteur's opinion, without a hearing, and the secret vote recorded 63 favorable votes and 4 against, above the 41 necessary. The indication still needs to be endorsed by the Chamber of Deputies. The choice of Pacheco was considered certain since he was passed over by Lula for a seat on the Supreme Federal Court.
