Prime Minister Luís Montenegro unveiled on Wednesday, in Cascais, a street sign naming an avenue of the municipality after Francisco Pinto Balsemão. The ceremony was attended by Mercedes Balsemão, the widow of the former prime minister.
Montenegro described Balsemão as an optimist and stated that this quality "is also lacking" today. The prime minister emphasized that Balsemão "was an example that encourages us not to wither in the face of reality."
Francisco Pinto Balsemão was prime minister of Portugal between 1980 and 1981, and also founded the business group Impresa. He passed away in March 2022 at the age of 80. Avenida Francisco Pinto Balsemão is located in the Cascais area, the place where the former politician had his residence.
